If you're looking to access the Mount Portal Lookout, you'll first need to login. There are a few different ways you can do this, but the easiest way is by using the Mount Portal Lookout's website. How to view Mount Portal Lookout
Mount Portal Lookout is a beautiful place to visit, and there are many ways to get there. You can hike or take a shuttle from the parking lot at the bottom of the lookout. Or, you can use the public access gate on Stevens Road.
To get to the public access gate on Stevens Road, you need to login first. To do this, go to http://www.nps.gov/mpp and click on “Login” in the upper left corner. You will be asked for your name and password. Once you have logged in, click on “My Account” in the upper right corner and then on “Activity Log” in the lower left corner. You will see an entry for Mount Portal Lookout in the Activity Log. The entry will have your name, date of visit, and description of what you did at the lookout.
Mount Portal Lookout Tips
To login to the Mount Portal Lookout, first find your nearest parking lot and look for the red kiosk. There you will find a sign that says "Mount Portal Lookout" and lists the hours of operation. If you are arriving during off-hours, you can still enjoy the lookout by purchasing a visitor pass from the kiosk. Parking at the lookout is free after 4 p.m. every day!
Once inside, follow the path up to the observation deck. You'll find benches and picnic tables if you'd like to take a break while enjoying your view. Be sure to check out the information panels on each side of the observation deck, which provide historical insights into Mount Portal and surrounding areas.
If you're looking to get up close and personal with nature, head down to the visitor center belowground. There, you can learn about Mount Portal's geology and ecology, as well as explore exhibits about local wildlife. The center is open daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and admission is free for all ages!
