The Lake of the Ozarks is located in southwestern Missouri. It’s bordered by Arkansas to the north and northeast, Kansas to the east, and Oklahoma to the south. The lake covers 1,815 square miles and has a maximum depth of 417 feet.
The area was first settled in the early 1800s by pioneers who arrived in boats. The first permanent settlement was founded in 1819. The town of Osage Beach was later named for a tribe of Native Americans who lived near the lake. Today, the town is home to about 3,000 residents.
The lake is fed by three major streams: the Current River, Salt River, and White River. All three streams are continuations of the Missouri River. The lake is also fed by numerous smaller tributaries from surrounding hills and mountains.

History of the Lake Of The Ozarks
The lake is said to have been formed about 10,000 years ago by the eruption of Mount St. Helens. The lake was originally called Clear Lake and it was named for the crystal-clear water that surrounded the shores. In 1828, John Wesley Powell named the lake after The Ozarks, a geological formation in western Missouri. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1833 and Clear Lake became known as Powell's Lake. In 1838, a log Jam caused the waters of Clear Lake to mix with those of Mud Lake and formed what is now known as The Grand Strand. Hundreds of boatloads of sand were carried in on logs from Arkansas to form beaches along what is now known as Washington Avenue. In 1855, a railroad was built through the area and Clear Lake became known as Ozark Lake. In 1886, a dam was built on Spring River and Ozark Lake was divided into Upper and Lower Lakes.
The first motel was built on land adjacent to the lake in 1928 and it was called the White House Inn. The name was changed to Sunset Inn in 1930 and it continued to operate under that name until 1969. That year, the resort was purchased by Don and Jeanette Shaffer who renamed it
